A Monster Card!

I'm trying to make at least one card with each of the Operation Write Home sketches. Because I just started doing this last year that means I have to get through all of the old sketches and keep up with the new ones.

This card is based on the latest OWH sketch, #249. I was glad to see this sketch because the latest challenge from Our Daily Bread Designs is "No Coloring." I have a monster truck stamp from ODBD that doesn't need coloring, but I was really struggling to come up with a card design. Sketch #249 looked perfect, and its nice to use a ODBD stamp because they are one of the stamp companies that supports OWH.

Operation Write Home Sketch #249

I like this card, but if I made another I think I would use colored cardstock or ever paper with a subtle pattern on it. This one has a little too much white for my taste.

The current challenge at Simon Says Stamp is "Anything Goes." Well, this card qualifies, so I'm entering it.

Stamp: Our Daily Bread Designs, Special Boy
Ink: Versafine Sepia
Embroidery floss: From stash
Paper: DCWV Animal Print Stack
Punch: Stampin' Up Bitty Banner

Cherished Card

I love the look of multi-media cards, distress inks, art journal pages, ATC and other artsy projects. But my own stuff usually ends up pretty structured and stiff. So the most recent challenge at Waffle Flower was a tough one for me. It was a photo inspiration challenge and the photo was a white pillow with some overlapping transparent circles in different colors.

So I found a stamp from Club Scrap that I had never used before with some overlapping circles on it. I stamped it with clear embossing ink and then embossed with a two-tone light pink embossing power from Lindy's Stamp Gang.

Then I blended two colors of distress ink over that and cut around the stamped image in a shape that somewhat resembles the pillow. This piece is popped up with foam tape to give it some dimension.

The background paper needed to be subtle so it wouldn't compete with the stamped image. I found this light pink paper from Studio G in my stash. I needed to break up the solid background so a stamped the loopy shape along the left.

Finally, since the inspiration photo included some smaller circles, I got out the raindrops from Cloud 9 and placed them in sort of a spiral along the card.

This card needed a sentiment, but because the design was so unusual, the usual sentiments didn't seem to fit. It needed a word that expressed a concept or emotion rather than the usual "thank you," or "I love you." I found the word "Cherished" in one of my MFT stamp sets and that worked.

For all that effort I'm glad this one qualifies for more than one challenge. The Mixed Media Monthly Challenge is "Think Pink." The embossed image may look almost white, but it is a two-tone embossing power and is actually pink, especially if you hold it at the right angle. The background paper is pink, and the word "Cherished" is stamped in pink.

This one will go in the Simon Says Stamp Monday -- "No Rules," and their Wednesday challenge -- "Anything Goes."

Sweet Flowers for Mother

So when you make cards for Operation Write Home, you're always thinking a couple of holidays ahead. That's because OWH needs to get them to overseas military early enough so that they can write in them and send them back to the U.S.

That's probably why when I saw the most recent My Favorite Things Color Challenge my thoughts turned to Mother's Day. I played it safe by just stamping the word "Mother" on this card. This way it could also be used for a mother's birthday, or even just to let her know you're thinking of her.

The colors over at MFT Color Challenge #16 happened to match some paper from my stash. This piece of paper sat around for nearly a year and I had no idea what to do with it. Thanks MFT for motivating me to finally use it! The solid purple is on the one side and the flowers are on the other. I should have enough left to make at least a few more cards.

Early Mother's Day Card

The Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge is "No Rules," and their Wednesday challenge is "Anything Goes." Aren't those the same thing? In any case. I'm entering this card in both.

Cherry Blossoms Card

It's nearly spring. It doesn't look like it here in Chicago, but we can at least look forward to warmer weather.

What could represent spring better than cherry blossoms? I got out a few sheets of the Konnichiwa paper from Basic Grey and one of the February sketches from Viva la Verve and started to play. I have a pack of embellishments to go with the Konnichiwa paper too. The one I used was about the right size to fit with the sketch.

Because the paper was in the shape of a lantern, I decided to let it hang from embroidery floss rather than have string go over it or under it.

Basic Grey Konnichiwa

Most of the challenges out there right now are really open-ended. So this card qualifies for several. The Mixed Media Monthly challenge is "Think Pink," and this card has pink embroidery floss and pink flowers on it. The Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge is "No Rules," and their Wednesday challenge is "Anything Goes." Aren't those the same thing? Whimsy Stamps challenge is "Use a Sentiment." Easy enough.

Monkey Birthday!

I'm having a great time with my little 6" x 6" pad of Basic Grey Oliver paper. For the design of this card I used Operation Write Home Sketch #152 which is rapidly becoming a favorite.

Operation Write Home #152

In honor of their 100th challenge, the theme over at Lawnscaping is birthdays.

They provided this inspiration photo, but also said that any birthday theme would do:

I am also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge which for this week is "Add a Little Texture. " The Bazzill paper I used is one that they sell already embossed. I thought the leaf design would go well with the little monkeys.

This card is in the Simon Says Stamp Monday - "Anything Goes" challenge as well.

Home is Where My Heart is

The latest challenge from the Mod Squad challenge was really interesting. We were asked to stamp the same image three times, cut them out and then layer them. My first attempt was an epic fail involving watercolor and a flower stamp. It will not be pictured here.

Sometimes we just need to work with our limitations. I took an easier route and chose a stamp with straight lines. Instead of coloring each layer, I stamped on different colored papers. For color inspiration I used the colors from the latest Your Next Stamp challenge.

I embossed the bottom layer of paper with a bricks design that would go along with the idea of a house. For the sentiment I used "Home is Where My Heart is." A perfect sentiment for a card going to Operation Write Home.

I'm continuing to work my way through all of the Operation Write Home sketches. Wow, this project seems endless, but I'm nearly halfway through! This card uses sketch #116 which is from April 2012. I hadn't even heard of OWH back then.

Cherry Hello

The current Color Challenge from My Favorite Things is to use a bright red, ice blue, dark blue and kraft. These colors match very well with the PB&J collection from Basic Grey.

For the layout of this card I used the inspiration photo from the Waffle Flower blog. It includes three plants along the bottom and bricks in the background. I used a bricks embossing folder on navy paper behind the three cherries to match the ideas in the photo.

I am also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge which for this week is "Add a Little Texture. "

Cute Little Girl Birthday

I needed a birthday card for a little girl who is turning 8. For the design I used My Favorite Things Sketch 216 from their Wednesday Sketch Challenge

In honor of their 100th challenge, the theme over at Lawnscaping is birthdays.

They provided this inspiration photo, but also said that any birthday theme would do:

This card is doing triple duty! The Mid-month Throwdown at Operation Write Home is Cards for Kids. I'll give this card to a little girl I know, but I'll make extra copies to donate to OWH. Right now they only want up to 5 copies of any given card. That's ok. I probably don't have enough of these papers to make more that that anyway.

What is paradise?

The Monday Challenge this week at Simon Says Stamp is "Paradise." That got me thinking...what is paradise?

The Our Daily Bread Designs Challenge is based on a photo for inspiration. The photo shows flowers. The dominant colors are white, green, and red.

So I started looking at my papers. What do you know? The Oliver collection from Basic Grey includes green white and red! The red on these papers is very subtle, but it's there.

As I was working on this, I wanted to add a sentiment. I chose "tranquility" from another ODBD set.

Then it hit me. Relaxing by the water, fishing, that is pretty much my definition of paradise. BINGO! Two challenges complete!

So Special

I'm really enjoying the papers in the Basic Grey Bittersweet collection.

The most recent Inspiration Challenge at the Verve Blog is called "Vivacious Valentine," and includes a photo of little hearts attached to twigs. My card doesn't resemble the picture very much. I was going for a love card that was a little less traditional and that could be donated to Operation Write Home

Anytime Valentine

I have a bunch of beautiful paper from the Basic Grey collection called "Kissing Booth." It's so lovely that I've been reluctant to cut into it.

Then along came the most recent Inspiration Challenge at the Verve Blog. It's called "Vivacious Valentine," and included a photo of little hearts attached to twigs. All the white space between the twigs reminded me of the white space in the paper I used for the top half of this card. I punched the heart shapes from other papers from the same collection.

I'm really happy with the result. Maybe happy enough to cut into these papers some more to make other versions of this card ;)

No Matter What Life Brings You...

Riley and Co makes dozens of really funny sentiment stamps. As soon as I saw this one, I had to have it.  Then came the challenge of finding an appropriate stamp and paper to match. I'm really happy with this combination, and it fits with this week's Wednesday Challenge this at Simon Says Stamp -- "All Creatures Great and Small."

Alphabet Soup

I love card designs that use 3" x 3" squares because I can use a whole sheet of 6" x 6" paper or 12" x 12" paper and not have any leftover scraps. A couple weeks ago I cut a 12" x 12" sheet of paper from the My Mind's Eye Alphabet Soup Boy collection into 16 3" x 3" squares. So, I've been going through all the Operation Write Home sketches that use 3 inch squares.

The theme for the Wednesday Challenge this week at Simon Says Stamp is "All Creatures Great and Small." They are focusing on Paper Smooches stamps this week. That's easy for me. The Paper Smooches Sentiment Sampler is one of my favorite stamp sets and I use it all the time.

Life's Ruff

The theme for the Wednesday Challenge this week at Simon Says Stamp is "All Creatures Great and Small." I have a collection of mounted rubber dog stamps that I bought in one big lot on Ebay (along with fish, trilobites, flies and lot of other somewhat odd stamps). This cute pup was one of the stamps in the lot. It looks hand-mounted and the only thing on the stamp block is the word "detailed" written in pen.

For the card design I turned to Operation Write Home Sketch #190.

Missing Your Voice

For this card I started out trying to stick to a pink and red color scheme. But this card just really needed some orange. I used Bazzill Tangelo as a matting layer and Liquid Pearls in the upper right corner.

For the layout I used My Favorite Things Sketch 215. This is a really versatile sketch and I can see getting a lot of mileage out of it.

This card will be great for sending to Operation Write Home. Some military parent can send it home to their child. The card base is pretty dark, so I lined it with white paper. OWH guidelines request that we use paper light enough to write on with a pencil.

Pink Kitty

This week the challenge at the Monday Challenge Blog at Simon Says Stamp was to use red and/or pink. What goes better with pink than Hello Kitty? Not much!

The Wednesday Challenge this week is "All Creatures Great and Small." Hello Kitty is a small creature, right? I hope fictional creatures count.

Last year I decide to challenge myself by using EACH of the Operation Write Home card sketches. There are currently 248 sketches and 2 more are released each month.  At this point, I have used over 100 sketches. I have no deadline for this goal, so no pressure. Its just a way to keep practicing and learning.

This card uses OWH Sketch #227. I added some blue for contrast so that things would "pop" a bit. This card should fit the needs of OWH well. They often ask for all-occasion cards that can be sent back home to children. This one doesn't have sandcastles, fall leaves or snowmen on it. So, it could be sent any time of year

A Love CASE

This week the challenge at the Monday Challenge Blog at Simon Says Stamp was to use red and/or pink. That was what got me to finally take a shot at CASE'ing this card that I had pinned on Pinterest.

I often copy other people's card designs. This usually involves choosing a similar layout and color scheme or a similar choice in paper patterns. I replicated this card so closely that its kind of embarrassing. I wouldn't even post it if it weren't for the SSS challenge.

I did change a couple things up. I used a different border sticker at the seam. I used a different take and put it and the string in the upper left instead of the lower right. I used a different sticker on the right.

So, what do you this? Is CASE'ing like this bad etiquette? I'm not selling this card for profit. I'll either use it myself or donate it to Operation Write Home. Does that make a difference?
I've only been making cards for 2 years so I really am curious about the "rules" when you CASE a card. Please LMK.

Bittersweet Flower

For this card I used Our Daily Bread Designs Sketch 226. I just could not get into this sketch at first. No offense to the designer. This was completely due to a lack of imagination on my part, not any design flaw in the sketch. Once I started working with it and making it my own, I started really enjoying it and seeing more and more possibilities for it. I have two different cards made with this so far and now see many more potential uses for it.

This week the challenge at the Monday Challenge Blog at Simon Says Stamp was to use red and/or pink. I used these great papers from the Basic Grey Bittersweet collection as well as a chipboard embellishment from the same collection.

Sitting Here Thinking of You

I made this card specifically for the Monday Challenge at Simon Says Stamp. This week the challenge was to use red and/or pink. The Monday Challenge Team tends toward a style that is more on the artsy/shabby chic/mixed media end of things. Although I'm drawn to this style and love the look, its new to me and surprisingly difficult. I find myself lining everything up in straight lines, making sure all my borders are even and everything is symmetrical. Before I know it, my "artsy" cards start looking clean and simple!

So, this is the first card in the "distressed" style that I am happy with.

Because I'm still working my way through all the Operation Write Home sketches. I used sketch #155 for this card.

Puppy Card

As I have mentioned before, I am slowly making my way through all of the Operation Write Home card sketches. At this point, I have used over 100 sketches. Sketch #152 did not appeal to me at all when I first saw it. Now that I made this cute card with it, I think it might eventually become a favorite. As a bonus, if you cut the squares to 2" x 2" you can cut into a 6" x 6" paper and not have any odd pieces left over.

The theme for the Wednesday Challenge this week at Simon Says Stamp is "All Creatures Great and Small." I think this cute little pup qualifies.

Each month Our Daily Bread Designs sponsors the shipping on boxes of cards for Operation Write Home based on how many people participate in their challenge. The February ODBD Challenge at OWH is "Animals."

Celebrate This Day

As a cardmaker, I find that the 12" x 12" papers meant for scrapbookers can sometimes be difficult to work with. Very large patterns can overwhelm a 5 1/2' x 4 1/4" card. One way to tame those large prints is to break up the pattern into smaller pieces. Operation Write Home sketch #91 does exactly that. Cutting the paper into thirds makes the design less imposing.

Operation Write Home Sketch #91

I just discovered a new challenge. This one is from Your Next Stamp. They have a challenge to use either the sketch or the color scheme. My card uses the three hues of green they selected.

Bright and Beautiful

Today I wanted to make something to enter in the Waffle Flower challenge which includes red, bright pink and orange. I also am practically addicted to Mojo Monday sketch 383I think this card proves the value of using color pallets and card sketches together. Until I develop a better eye for color, maybe I should stick to the colors suggested in challenges.

I'm also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge.  This week, the challenge is "All Things Bright and Beautiful."

Dimensional Ruffle

The challenge this week at Waffle Flower includes a pallet of the colors red, orange, bright pink and a subtle tint close to white. I chose cardstock from my stash to match these colors as well as I could. I cut the cardstock into 4" x 1.5" pieces, used a border punch on them, and layered them into a dimensional ruffle. I found a ribbon in my stash that was the exact color needed to match.

This was my first time making a dimensional ruffle. I really liked this technique and it was a great way to use up scraps too!

Because this card is really bright, I'm entering it in the Simon Says Stamp All Things Bright and Beautiful challenge as well.

"H" is for "Hi!"

I'm having a good time using the My Mind's Eye Alphabet Soup paper. It was a nice match with the latest Waffle Flower Challenge. This challenge includes a photo of some tops in red and orange colors. The colors and swirl patterns in the paper echo these images.

"H" is for "Hello Kitty"

This week the Monday Challenge at Simon Says Stamp is "H is for..."

In this case, "H" is for "Hello Kitty."

Last year I decided to print out all of the Operation Write Home sketches and to make at least one card using each sketch. Right now OWH has 247 sketches, and they are releasing two new sketches per month. As you can imagine, using each of those sketches is taking some time!

Today's card uses one of the earliest sketches: sketch #10. The big pad of Hello Kitty paper I bought at Michaels came with lots of little pre-printed embellishments. Three of the stamp images fit this sketch perfectly. By my count I have used 99 of the sketches, so this is my 100th sketch. Not even halfway done, but still a nice landmark!

This is my second card inspired by Mojo Monday Sketch #383. This sketch is great! I have many more ideas for how to use it. After I made this card I made another variation on it with the blue flower paper on the bottom and the sailboat paper on top.

"H" is for "Hugs"

This week the Monday Challenge at Simon Says Stamp is "H is for..."

I'm still working toward making at least one card for each Operation Write Home sketch. So today's card uses OWH sketch #30.

I love card designs that use 3" x 3" squares because I can use a whole sheet of 6" x 6" paper or 12" x 12" paper and not have any leftover scraps. So I modified the OWH sketch a little so that I could use a 3" x 3" piece of paper.

The Paper Smooches Sparks challenge this week is "Anything Goes." Well, this card certainly meets that criteria. I've been getting a lot of mileage out of the Paper Smooches set that includes the "Hugs" sentiment used here.

"H" is for "Happy"

This week the Monday Challenge at Simon Says Stamp is "H is for..."

I'm still working toward making at least one card for each Operation Write Home sketch. So today's card uses OWH sketch #76.

The pack of My Mind's Eye paper I'm using came with some chipboard embellishments. They worked nicely as additions to this card. Because I didn't want the sentiment to compete with the chipboard elements, I stamped it directly on the patterned paper.

The Paper Smooches Sparks challenge this week is "Anything Goes." So, that includes this card, lol. I use the Paper Smooches Sentiment Sampler all the time.

Blossom Card

I'm really excited about this card. It came together really easily and I'm so pleased with the result.

For the layout I used Mojo Monday sketch 383. This sketch is great for using with a 6" x 6" pad. If you cut the base layer of patterned paper to 5" x 3.75" you will have a piece of paper left that measures 5" x 2.25" which is perfect for the top piece of patterned paper. If the paper is double sided, just flip the smaller piece of paper over for a coordinating layer. Or, use a different paper from the same pad to cut a base layer for a second card. Then, use the smaller leftover paper from the first card as the coordinating paper for the second.

I'm also entering this card in the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge.  This week, the challenge is "All Things Bright and Beautiful."

Bright Stars Card

This card was made for the Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge -- All Things Bright and Beautiful. My card is more on the bright side, not so much the beautiful side. I'm still trying to keep up with the OWH sketches, so I used sketch #246 here. The stamp is part of a OWH fundraiser set made by Hero Arts called "You're a Winner".

The paper I used came with matching stickers and I used three of them as embellishments.
